Railroad crossing closed during track repair
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Rapid City railroads are on track to see some repairs throughout the summer, and those repairs began Tuesday.
Crews are working on the railroad tracks that sit on East New York Street between East Boulevard and Third Street.
Old tracks are being cut out and replaced to ensure a train’s safe passage.
Work is expected to continue through midday Wednesday, and the crossing will stay closed until repairs are finished.
Track Supervisor, Dillard Smock, says it shouldn’t take too long to install the new track.
”For safety, we’re putting a new piece of rail in. Just getting the old rail out, putting a new piece of rail in. Going to replace it with a wood crossing. So, it’ll be brand new. Got the bad rail out. We should be done with by noon tomorrow,” says Smock.
Later in the summer, railroad teams will also work on crossings on East North Street near Rushmore Crossing, and on Fifth Street between Omaha and Main Streets.
Dates of these repairs have yet to be announced.
