Rapid City stabbing upgraded from aggravated assault to homicide

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - A 30-year-old man has died from injuries sustained during a stabbing incident.

At approximately 10:25 p.m. on Tuesday, June 8, police were dispatched to an apartment at 10 Surfwood Drive following a report of a stabbing.

Upon arrival, police found the male victim with a stab wound to the chest. Emergency first aid was administered before a medical unit arrived. The victim was transported to the for hospital treatment of critical, life-threatening injuries.

An investigation revealed 34-year-old Ashley Peltier, of Rapid City, to be the suspect responsible for the attack. Peltier was placed under arrest for Aggravated Assault and transported to the Pennington County Jail.

In the morning hours of June 9th, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The deceased in identified as 30-year-old James Rice of Rapid City. Rice was also known as Stanley Kennard III.

The investigation has now been upgraded to a homicide.

Peltier is being held at the Pennington County Jail with charges of Second Degree Murder, with an active and ongoing inquest into the case.
