Shooting in downtown Cleveland hospitalizes 9 people
CLEVELAND (WOIO/Gray News) - Police say a shooting in downtown Cleveland sent multiple people to the hospital.
Cleveland Police Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia confirmed the shooting occurred around 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 1200 block of West 6th Street. She said an unknown suspect opened fire toward a group of people.
Ciaccia also confirmed nine people were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds, WOIO reports.
The nine injured range in age from 22 to 38 years old.
Police said there have been no arrests in this shooting and investigators are currently reviewing evidence while interviewing victims.
Cleveland EMS officials said during Sunday’s press conference that all victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, with the exception of one man who suffered serious injuries.
Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb released a statement in response to the shooting:
“This is yet another tragic incident of senseless gun violence in our city. We continue to see an uptick in shootings across our city ever since Republican lawmakers passed Senate Bill 215 last year allowing permitless carry. It’s important we recognize this and hold these lawmakers accountable for passing dangerous gun laws in our state. As a result, mayors cannot pass one piece of legislation aimed at gun reform. Unfortunately, we likely will continue to see incidents like this occur unless change is made at the Statehouse.”
