Eating locally purchased red meat could be beneficial to your health
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - There are many health benefits to eating less meat in your diet, but if cutting it out isn’t for you, there are ways to eat meats that are made better.
According to the Mayo Clinic, eating less meat is proven to lower your risk of heart disease and high blood pressure, among other things. Eating higher-quality meats can also lead to healthier habits.
“We have grass-fed beef out here in Western South Dakota, and I think that’s a very nutritious source of protein,” says cardiologist Dr. John Heilman.
By getting a meat science degree, Brian Mehmen knew the importance of quality meat. In 2020, his son Noah pitched the idea of buying a butcher shop to his father, and thus the Black Hills Butcher Shop was born. Now whether it’s a small party or a large wedding, all meats produced at the Spearfish shop are hand-selected and cut that day, ensuring that the meat is the best you can buy.
Buying meat locally can ensure you know exactly what you’re getting into when purchasing.
“The biggest part of purchasing locally isn’t just the meat in itself, it’s also the face that it comes behind. Being able to come in and ask questions, talk about the product that you’re going to ingest is something that’s really important. I think it’s overshadowed nowadays with the quickness of stuff. People like going into big producers, being able to grab something for cheap, and walk out. It’s a lot easier walking through that door, asking about a product, maybe finding out something you didn’t know about,” says Noah Mehmen.
The Black Hills Butcher Shop knows quality meat is what keeps customers happy. They source all meats from the Ranchers Reserve Program which allows for hand-selected quality meats to always be available.
“So, everything in our front case is cut fresh every day. It’s all-choice grade. We do that for two reasons; one, price-wise it keeps everything level, but it also gives you a high-quality product,” Mehmen continues.
Balance is key when it comes to keeping a healthy red-meat diet.
“I think it’s important to eat red meat in moderation. Most doctors and the American Heart Association recommend maybe three servings a week,” Dr. Heilman finishes.
While red meat is full of vital vitamins and proteins, too much can cause a steady decline when it comes to our health, especially as we get older. Talk to your doctor before making any permanent changes to your diet.
