FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (KTVK/KPHO/Gray News) - A trip on the slopes turned tragic on Monday when a skier hit a tree and died at a ski resort in Arizona.

The incident happened at about 11 a.m. Monday at the Arizona Snowball alpine ski resort, according to the Coconino Sheriff’s Office. The skier was on the Upper Ridge run, a black diamond run considered one of the most difficult runs at the resort, when investigators say the man skied just outside the boundary line and struck a tree.

Other people in the area saw the crash and told the ski patrol staff, who tried to save the man. He was taken to the closest first aid station but later died.

The man’s name has not been released, but investigators confirm the 22-year-old lived in Tempe.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
