Mother arrested after toddler found in Walmart wearing only diaper amid 20 degree weather

BYRAM, Miss. (WLBT/Gray News) - A mother from Byram, Mississippi, is behind bars after police discovered her 2-year-old son wearing only a diaper inside a grocery store with below-freezing temperatures outside.

The child was seen at around 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 17 at the Walmart on Handley Boulevard.

Police made contact with the child’s mother, 26-year-old Kambria Darby, in the parking lot. Investigators discovered that the child was clothed inside the store by other shoppers, but the toddler was still freezing and shaking from the cold temperatures.

Darby was placed in custody and charged with child neglect. Her toddler was secured in a warm police unit.

First responders evaluated the child’s condition and Child Protective Services responded, ultimately releasing the child to an approved relative.
