RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - What are people drinking on Super Bowl Sunday? I was surprised that beer wasn’t the dominant drink of choice for game day. Still, beer consumption reportedly surges 90 percent on Super Bowl Sunday.

Numerator, a consumer insights and data company, recently crunched the numbers, revealing that 50 percent of Super Bowl fans will sip soft drinks during the game ... 37 percent go for beer ... 22 percent for spirits, and 22 percent for wine and champagne ... another 15 percentage points for sparkling water ... 13 percent for juice ... 10 percent for hard cider ...

Those numbers add up to more than 100 percent. How can that be accurate? That’s because people are consuming more than one type of beverage throughout the game. Since this is Mixology we will stick with the spirits.

I looked online for Super Bowl-themed drinks but there aren’t many, and the ones I saw didn’t pique my interest. Also, a lot of themed drinks require ingredients you might not have in your bar or pantry. So, you buy them, and they sit for another year.

Another reason -- you can spend a lot of time and money to have beverages with a Super Bowl theme and your guests just want a soda or beer.

So, the best thing to do is take an established cocktail and tweak it a little. One of the easiest to alter, in my world anyway, is an Old Fashioned. Substitute the sugar with honey syrup and use different bitters.

Here is a recipe that works, Football Fiz, a variation of a Highball with few ingredients.

  • Sugar, for rimming (Super Bowl official colors are red and purple)
  • Juice and zest of 1 lime (1 oz juice)
  • Lime wedges, for rimming
  • Ginger ale
  • 1 1/2 oz whiskey (or bourbon)
  • Ice

On a small plate, put red sugar on half of the plate and purple on the other half, adding some lime zest to both sugars. Using a lime wedge, wet the rim of a rocks glass, then dip it in the sugar so you have a purple and red rim. Add a large ice cub, whiskey (or bourbon), ginger ale, and lime juice in the glass, stir to mix, and then top with a lime twist.
