RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Champagne doesn’t have to be limited to New Year’s Eve toasts. but a good bottle is going to set you back a pretty penny. We have an inexpensive alternative that fits your wallet and your taste.

Italian Prosecco is a good substitute for champagne, especially in cocktails. It is lighter and sweeter.

A drink I keep putting off doing is the French 75, a classic cocktail that dates back to World War I. It was created at the New York Bar in Paris. The bar later was named Harry’s New York Bar. The story is that the kick from this drink was like being shelled with the French 75mm field gun.

The French 75 is gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and champagne. It is similar to other champagne drinks that originated in the 19th century.

Here’s a take on the French 75, called the French 77. It is a cocktail of this century but no idea why they call it “77.” We substituted Prosecco for the champagne and dropped the gin and syrup for some elderflower liqueur.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce St Germain elderflower liqueur
  • 1/4 ounce lemon juice
  • 4 ounces Prosecco or other sparkling wine
  • Lemon twist, for garnish

Directions

Add an ounce of St Germain elderflower liqueur and a quarter ounce of fresh lemon juice into a champagne glass, fill the rest with chilled Prosecco, and add a lemon twist for garnish.
