5 people killed in fiery crash involving car hauler on highway

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WHNS/Gray News) - Five people died Saturday night in a crash involving three vehicle, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened just before 9:30 p.m. along I-26 near mile marker 12, according to authorities.

Authorities say a commercial vehicle car hauler was traveling west and struck the rear end of a 2022 Toyota sedan. After hitting the sedan, the car hauler then crossed the cable barrier into the eastbound lane and was hit by a 2024 Honda sedan that was traveling east.

Master Trooper Gary Miller says all five people in the Honda were killed.

The driver of the Toyota was the only person in the car and was not injured.

The driver of the commercial car hauler was the only person in the vehicle and was taken to a nearby hospital for injuries.

The crash shut down all lanes of I-26 in the area.

The identities of the people who died have not been released. The crash is still under investigation by highway patrol.
