Beloved giraffe dies at zoo after falling in exhibit overnight
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC/Gray News) - A zoo in Memphis is mourning the loss of one of its beloved animals this month.
Officials with the Memphis Zoo announced the death of giraffe Angela Kate after she fell and injured herself overnight while in her exhibit area on March 5.
“The Memphis Zoo team mourns deeply for Angela Kate’s passing, cherishing the memory of her immense presence,” the zoo shared.
According to the animal care team, they realized that Angela’s injuries left no possibility for recovery, and they made the difficult decision to euthanize her.
Zoo officials said Angela was one of the most popular and beloved female giraffes. She was born at the zoo in 2006.
“Her memory will forever live on in our hearts and within the legacy of Memphis Zoo,” the team said.
Officials said it is unknown how or why Angela fell, but they are prioritizing an extensive regrading and resurfacing of the habitat.
