RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Pi Day is a celebration where lovers of pies, math enthusiasts, and nerds come together to enjoy this unique occasion, or should I say equation.

To help ring in the day, Blaze Pizza stores around Rapid City had a pizza sale in which every pie was only $3.14. Leading to lines at the store that stretched all the way outside.

Blaze Pizza GM, Owen Van Dam, says he was excited when the store opened its doors for the sale. “It’s super exciting, we’ve been hoopin and hollerin all day. I mean you can’t really be mad when you’re working this hard. You don’t really see the time go by. You’re just working, it is a lot of fun.”

The lines remained busy throughout the afternoon as plenty of patrons were ready to take advantage of budget-friendly pizza. Van Dam added that seeing the lines reminded him of Black Friday. “We had people waiting outside like it was Black Friday, so 10:30 (A.M.) rolls around we had a line out the door. Since then, it’s been nothing but, the doors haven’t shut then.”

Van Dam says the sale brought new customers as they were curious to try the pizza.

If you happened to be over at the School of Mines campus, you may not have felt the Pie Day craze as much due to Spring Break, however, you may have just had to dig a little deeper.

One student working inside the Math Department at the McLaury Building, Isaac Kolousek, says the different departments around campus like to indulge in math memes for good old-fashioned nerdy fun. “Physics department might post memes about how they just rounded to three and that ticks off the math people who only use the symbol pie, who you know, because that has a completely different meaning.”

Whether you love pizza or having fun creating pie equations, it’s a great time for people to come together and enjoy the quirky experience.
