Mixology at Home - Nutty Irishman
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - While I complain about holiday drinks, many celebratory cocktails are great anytime of the year. Honestly, you can take most cocktails, tweak them a little, add a colored sugar or salt rim, different garnish and you have a holiday hit.
This drink, the Nutty Irishman, makes good use of the hazelnut liqueur Frangelico. It is an easy liqueur to find and quite versatile in your home bar. It works well with Irish cream. For this drink, you can use pretty much any liqueur with a nut flavor, such as Amaretto.
The recipe calls for homemade whipped cream. It is easy to make and the taste is far superior to any store-bought whipped cream in a can.
Remember when we did the Irish coffee? We added a little Frangelico to the whipped cream, giving us a nice take on the traditional coffee drink. This drink calls for whipped cream with some Irish cream and powdered sugar added.
Because of time constraints, I did the whipped cream part of this drink earlier. It is best to do it close to the time you make the drink, putting the whipped cream into the refrigerator to chill it.
Irish whipped cream:
- 1/2 cup whipping/heavy cream
- 1 1/2 tsp powdered sugar
- 1 oz Irish cream (Baileys)
Directions: In the bowl of a stand mixer or a medium bowl with a hand mixer, whisk together cream and powdered sugar. Whip on high until stiff peaks form, then slowly add the Irish cream. Transfer cream into a piping bag or plastic bag with a corner snipped off and chill.
Cocktail:
- 1 1/2 oz Irish cream (Baileys)
- 1 1/2 oz Frangelico
- 1/2 TBS crushed hazelnuts or graham crackers for garnish
Directions: In a shaker, add Irish cream and hazelnut liqueur then fill with ice. Shake until the shaker is frosty, then strain the drink into a coupe glass. Pipe over Irish whipped cream and garnish with crushed hazelnuts or graham crackers.
