Driver receives maximum sentence in DUI crash that killed MADD advocate
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT/(Gray News) - A young man will be spending multiple years behind bars after pleading guilty to killing a woman in a drunk driving crash.
Rankin County District Attorney Bubba Bramlett announced this week that Colby James Tackett pleaded guilty to aggravated driving under the influence resulting in the death of Beverly Luckett, a 62-year-old nurse.
Tackett received the maximum sentence of 15 years in prison with 10 years suspended under supervised probation.
Authorities said Tackett, who was 17 years old at the time of the crash, was arrested for underage drinking less than two weeks before the deadly head-on collision in 2022.
“This is a heart-wrenching case. The Luckett family lost the matriarch of their family in a preventable tragedy,” Bramlett said. “It was not lost on anyone that Tackett should have received the proverbial wake-up call when he was arrested for underage drinking a mere 13 days before.”
Police said Tackett swerved his vehicle into Luckett’s travel lane, hitting her vehicle head-on.
According to authorities, Tackett blew a .131 on a preliminary breath test. The legal limit in Mississippi is .08.
Luckett was a longtime advocate with Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
