STURGIS, S.D. (KEVN) - On Monday, the first discussions were held to create an ordinance allowing the Sturgis City Council to vote on whether or not a public special election would be needed for some vacancies.

This new ordinance would fill the current gap that allows for the consideration of a special election to be set for vacancies at the mayoral or city council level. Giving the council more options when it comes to filling that position by letting the residents of Sturgis vote on who gets to fill the seat.

This is something that some of the representatives on the council believe is crucial to rebuilding trust between the community and the city.

“When you have a vacancy like that, particularly when you are talking about a key position in the mayor’s position, you know, having the opportunity to set an election, a special election allows the people to make that decision on who’s going to be the political leader for that community,” explained Sturgis City Council ward 4 representative Aaron Jordan.

If the ordinance were to pass the full council within the next month, this would allow the city to possibly hold a special election in the future where the public would vote on who gets to fill those vacancies.
