Black Hills Indian Artist Market showcases unique Native American artwork

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The Black Hills Indian Artist Market returned to Rapid City’s Dahl Arts Center for the fourth consecutive year.

Paintings, photography, and more were on display, but the market featured more than just visual art. In addition, the market included live music, a fashion show, and more. The artwork included at the market often utilized vibrant colors and traditional themes, which artists and organizers attributed to the unique styles of tribes in and around the Black Hills.

“If you go on any South Dakota Reservation, art is a huge industry,” Mike Two Bulls, one of the market’s organizers and a member of the Indian Art Committee, said.

Two Bulls also said the market began as Native Americans had experienced economic hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now that things have improved, the market helps them to showcase their creativity, network with other artists, and gain recognition for their craft.
