Noem voices concern for mothers’ health amid abortion right talks
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - In June 2022, after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, South Dakota began enforcing its trigger ban, prohibiting all abortions except to preserve the life of the pregnant woman.
Governor Kristi Noem said she is pro-life, but believes in taking care of mothers who may be put in situations where they have to decide between their lives and the baby’s. She wants to ensure these mothers are given the necessary information beforehand.
“Every state’s laws will look different based on what the people in those states want to, to be their law when it comes to abortion. And, uh, we should be focusing on these women that are in crisis and they’re in unprecedented situations and they need help and support and all the information that they can possibly have,” Noem said.
Noem also emphasized that the people of South Dakota, not the Governor, will decide what the laws will look like. The South Dakota Right to Abortion Amendment may appear on the November 5 ballot later this year.
