RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Pine Ridge Flute Society, featuring around a dozen high schoolers from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, held a concert at Rapid City’s Dahl Arts Center Thursday. The group’s music blends elements of traditional Lakota culture, rock and roll, and jazz-like improvisation. Using wooden flutes, many of which are uniquely decorated, they achieve a sound distinct from classical flutists.

Will Peters is the Flute Society’s mentor. He spoke about positive messages the group hopes to spread through their art. Peters described playing the flute as a positive emotional release - one which can help children to stay away from destructive behaviors such as self-harm and drug abuse. Peters mentioned the group has seen success in spreading in Lakota communities and he hopes they continue to do so for young people everywhere.
