9 hospitalized after carbon monoxide leak at Sam’s Club
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/Gray News) - A carbon monoxide gas leak has sent several people to the hospital at a Sam’s Club location in East Knoxville Tuesday morning.
According to the Knoxville Fire Department, its hazmat team responded to the store after receiving a call about people feeling nauseous.
KFD Assistant Fire Chief Mark Wilbanks said when crews arrived, management told them that an air conditioning unit on the roof had recently been worked on.
“Crews confirmed there was a malfunctioning unit on the roof. KFD worked with Sam’s Club management to secure the unit’s gas and air out of the building,” Wilbanks said.
First responders said nine people ended up being hospitalized due to the leak.
Wilbanks said the leak has since been fixed and the store is expected to reopen Wednesday.
