Mom of 3 sent ‘chilling’ text to best friend before boyfriend killed her, police say
BAMBERG COUNTY, S.C. (WIS/Gray News) - A mother of three in South Carolina sent a chilling text to her best friend before her boyfriend allegedly shot and killed her, according to authorities.
Deputies said 25-year-old Megan Bodiford was last heard from on April 25, when she texted a friend that she feared 28-year-old Jarrett Davis was going to kill her.
A few days later, she was reported missing.
It was then that deputies executed a search warrant at the couple’s home and took Davis into custody on an active domestic violence arrest warrant, WIS reported.
When deputies arrived, Bodiford was nowhere to be found, but her 4-month-old baby was there.
Five days later, human remains were found in a burnt car along a dirt road. The grisly discovery is less than two miles from Bodiford’s last known location, WIS reported.
Davis was arrested and charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, unlawful possession of a firearm, arson, and desecration of human remains.
“It’s gut-wrenching because he did not have to do all of that at all,” said Stephanie Nickens, one of Bodiford’s cousins. “I keep having this thought in my mind of how fearful she was in that moment.”
Nickens said she hopes Bodiford will be remembered for how she lived, and not for her tragic death.
“I want everyone to focus on what a beautiful soul she had, just a wonderful mother that she was,” she said. “She loved being around people.”
Officials have not yet released an identification for the remains that were found. DNA and dental records need to be studied first.
Davis is currently being held at the Bamberg County Detention Center.
A GoFundMe has been created to help assist Bodiford’s children in the aftermath of her death.
