RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - An award-winning restaurant is looking to rise out of the ashes.

Sugar Shack, a renowned burger joint in the Black Hills, burned down over the winter. The owners have plans to rebuild the popular eatery.

On December 13, around 10:30 p.m., flames were seen coming out of Sugar Shack off U.S Highway 385 south of Deadwood. While the restaurant burned to the ground, the cause of the fire remains unknown.

Owner Trevor Kautzman says he remembers the moment when he first received the news.

“Well, I was at home,” Kautzman said. “I live in Rapid, so we got the call at about 10:40ish that night and it was just utter shock.”

The Silver City Fire Department sent him a picture of what was taking place and at that moment, he and his wife knew they had lost their business. Despite the setback, Kautzman is seeking to restore the shack’s old charm.

“We are on the work of rebuilding in the same location, Kautzman said. “As you saw today (Tuesday), they are working on the demolition of it. Getting it all cleaned up so we can start to actually rebuild.”

The original building was built back in the 1940s as a different business, and it converted to Sugar Shack in the 70s.

Kautzman says it would be great to be up and running again before the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

“We’re hoping for middle of the summer,” Kautzman said. “That’s a tall order. That’s what we’re hoping for of course, but we should have it I’m hoping by September at the latest.”

To make up for the loss of revenue, he has an interesting plan set up two weeks from now.

“We will be selling burgers and hot dogs out of the general store to try and make up for some of the food loss around the Black Hills,” Kautzman said.
