STURGIS, S.D. (KEVN) - The first American Flat Track Events and American Motorcyclist Association Pro Racing flat track race proposal was rejected by Sturgis residents last month. Now, a new proposal was presented to the public to get the city and, more importantly, the residents on board.

The key elements of the new proposal for the Sturgis Tourist Trophy race downtown were a reduction in track size, financial elements, and the contract time frame.

The proposed track was originally half a mile but is now downsized to a quarter mile.

As for the contract, the five-year obligation was shortened to two years, with the possibility to renew for three additional years, giving the city the option to opt-out if they feel it isn’t benefiting them.

Finally, the financial aspect of the new proposal would include all of the expenses covered by sponsorships.

”We will evaluate how the first two years go; if there is a shortcoming in the first year, in 2024, the first proposal would’ve been we both would split those losses; that’s not what we’re proposing now. We will use the committed sponsorship for the 2025 event to cover any shortcoming that happens in 2024, and the city will still not be on the hook for that,” explained AMA Pro Racing technical director David McGrath.

Tuesday was the first time the city as a whole was shown the proposal; no further action has been taken by the city as of Wednesday.
