Severe thunderstorms tomorrow along with summer temps returning
Level 2/5 risk of storms Monday afternoon-evening that mainly produce large hail & damaging winds; isolated tornado risk very low
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Besides some showers drifting through the area, we had a decent afternoon. Some clouds and additional showers are expected to move through the area, with some isolated rumbles of thunder in NE Wyoming before the radar picture calms down. Otherwise, leftover clouds from this activity settle in overnight for several hours before tapering off on Monday morning, especially west of the Black Hills. Tonight’s lows should be mainly in the upper 50s to lower 60s, with the coolest temperatures happening under any sustained clearing and also in the Hills.
The clearing during the morning and afternoon hours on Monday should destabilize the airmass for thunderstorm activity during the afternoon. This is generally expected to develop in far NE Wyoming and into the Black Hills, intensifying through a wealth of our broadcast area. A level 2/5 (“Slight”) risk has been issued by the Storm Prediction Center for Crook & Weston Counties in Wyoming, Alzada in Carter County, MT, as well as a majority of our viewing area up to as far east as Eagle Butte & Kadoka in Haakon & Jackson Counties, respectively. The chief hazards expected are damaging winds, large hail & even a few isolated tornadoes.
The severe weather should clear out quite rapidly Monday evening around dinner time, setting up a clear sky for a nice sunset. Expect temperatures to reach the lower to mid-80s outside the Black Hills, with the warmest spots out towards the Badlands. The coolest spots should be in the Hills and through the Bighorns in NE Wyoming, where the upper 70s are expected.
Our clearing on Monday night is expected to persist Tuesday into Wednesday when upper-80s are expected, and even seeing some lower 80s creep into the higher elevations. We see temperatures level off a bit through the middle to end of the week since moisture and some clouds are expected to arrive out of the southeast. Generally, the higher the moisture content in the air, the tougher it gets to warm that air up. We also add to the discussion the possibility that some of those clouds may be thunderstorms as we make our way to the weekend, as we continue to see a tough developing to our west that has disturbances riding along to fire those off. We will continue to watch this development as we get closer to it.
