RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The Federal Trade Commission says scammers could be stealing your information through delivery app services, and a Rapid City delivery woman says this past weekend she almost fell victim to this type of scam.

A DoorDash delivery woman told KOTA News she was on her way to make a routine delivery when all of a sudden she received a phone call with, “DoorDash Support” as the caller ID. The caller claimed the order she was delivering was canceled but she would still be compensated for her time if she provided her bank routing number.

This raised concern with the delivery person who hung up immediately. Fortunately, she recognized the signs. But what do those signs look like?

“Oftentimes what’ll happen is the scammer will order something like that I just mentioned and cancel the order shortly after, then they’ll get ahold of the delivery driver and request their account information. They’ll pose as, say the door dash fraud support or something like that,” Sergeant Jason Mitzel of the Investigation Division of Pennington County said.

Mitzel says this kind of scam could be popping up a lot more frequently here in the Midwest as delivery apps become more popular in the region.

“As far as the online delivery apps I think its relatively new to this area but they have been around the country for the better part of last year or two or certainly since COVID when delivery apps started getting popular, anybody who receives these phone calls asking for account information or money, just hang up. Don’t engage with any conversation, don’t give any information out, any personal information,” said Mitzel.

If you become a victim of this type of scam or are suspicious of any email, text, or phone call you can report it to the FTC, RCPD, or Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.

To report a scam call Pennington County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number: (605) 394-2151 or the RCPD non-emergency number: (605) 394-4131.
