RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Chocolate, cherries and bourbon. What could possibly go wrong when you mix those ingredients? It’s no secret that bourbon and chocolate are a great combination; bourbon truffles come to mind.

For this Old Fashioned, I am using homemade cherry syrup. But you can buy syrups if you don’t want to go to the trouble of making them. See a cherry syrup recipe below. It might be a little too much but I’ve seen some Chocolate Old Fashioned recipes that call for chocolate syrup.

Chocolate Old Fashioned Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • ½ oz cherry syrup (no cherry syrup, try strawberry syrup)
  • 2 dashes chocolate bitters
  • 2 dashes aromatic bitters
  • Orange peel garnish

In a mixing glass with ice, add two ounces of bourbon, a half ounce of cherry syrup (or maybe try strawberry syrup), two dashes of chocolate bitters and two dashes of aromatic bitters. Stir the drink for about 30 seconds to chill it; then strain into a rocks or old fashioned glass with a large ice cube and garnish with an orange peel.

Cherry syrup

You use a pound of cherries (halved and stones removed) one cup of water, a cup of sugar. In a saucepan, add the water, sugar and cherries. Heat for about five minutes or until a low boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, uncovered. Strain the syrup into a bottle and store it in the refrigerator. The syrup should last two weeks. If you don’t plan on using the syrup a lot, you might opt for making half the recipe.
