Box Elder’s continuous growth brings new businesses and opportunities
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Box Elder has surpassed Spearfish to become the second-largest West River City, and it isn’t done growing. The announcement of a new stealth bomber coming to Ellsworth has intrigued businesses about a new customer base coming to the Rapid City area.
“Right before the B-21 was announced, there were probably 14 [Box Elder Chamber of Commerce] members,” Box Elder Mayor Larry Larson says, “We have 120 members now.”
The newest business in Box Elder is a Circle K convenience store. On Monday, Sentinel Federal Credit Union will kick off the construction of a new branch closer to Box Elder’s residential areas with a groundbreaking ceremony. Larson said he’s happy to have businesses like these accessible for people living in the city.
“They can go up in the hills, they can go into Rapid for more shopping, but we want the basic things to be right here in Box Elder,” Larson said.
While he feels it’s important to have businesses catering to locals, Larson mentioned he wants Box Elder to become more of an attractive destination for visitors. He cited the Air and Space Museum, the children’s museum and a craft brewery as places out-of-towners will be able to visit in the future.
