Conquering new heights; launch of women’s rock climbing course
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Black Hills Parks and Forests and She Jumps are partnering with Sylvan Rocks Climbing School to offer a beginner’s rock climbing course for women ages 18 and older.
Taking place on Sunday, June 23, the Discover Rock Climbing Course will introduce women to the sport in a supportive environment.
“Women, historically, have been a marginalized group in the outdoors, so we think it’s really important to create welcoming, safe spaces for women to try new things and engage with public lands,” Andrea Fountain, the Black Hills She Jumps event coordinator, said.
Participants will go out and learn the basics of rock climbing from professional female guides.
“It’s pretty cool to go out with new climbers and see them push themselves and succeed in a way that they maybe didn’t think possible, specifically with women, which I think is really cool, creating this safe space for women to be able to explore a new activity,” Bears Beeres, an instructor at Sylvan Rocks Climbing School, said.
Fountain says this new climbing course is a step in creating a more inclusive and supportive rock climbing community.
“Getting women and girls involved in outdoor activities is really important to me, and so I’m very glad I can use this avenue and work with these partners,” Fountain said.
The course costs $110. Contact Sylvan Rocks directly to register by calling 605-484-7585.
