RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - This Kids Count data center published its ‘Race for Results’ study aimed at comparing children’s progress on key milestones nationally and statewide. The last study was conducted seven years ago, however, this year’s study shows not much has changed for Native American children’s well-being.

The study compared six different racial groups and the likelihood that children in each group are meeting milestones associated with success. Out of the six major racial groups defined in the study, Native American children rank fifth with an index score of 418 only above Black children at 386. What is surprising is that South Dakota ranked last for Native children’s well-being as a state, despite having the fourth-highest Native American population.

Disparities continue to exist throughout the state, but one organization helping bridge that gap says their programs are centered around building their community and helping those who are uncomfortable receiving help elsewhere.

“Sometimes they don’t feel comfortable going to other organizations and so we help act as that advocate for them and can help bridge that gap. Connecting them to services and advocating for them in new ways that have not been done before,” Executive Director at Friends of the Children He-Sapa Valeriah Big Eagle said.

Big Eagle also says her organization stresses the importance of children being connected to the Native community at an early age so everyone can become stronger and sustainable enough to help those in need.
