RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - A collaboration between the Black Hills Community Theatre and the Ellsworth Air Force Base African American Heritage Committee this weekend will see the 2nd annual Juneteenth Celebration happen at the Historic Theatre in the Performing Arts Center of Rapid City, inviting people for a day of cultural exploration within and around the Rapid City community.

Featuring artists and giving exposure to minority and black-owned businesses isn’t the only thing that the event is trying to do. Creating productive conversations about the day and learning more about the history of June 19, 1865, is one of the goals of the event, especially in a culturally diverse region like the Black Hills.

“Juneteenth at its heart is a celebration of freedom, and South Dakota Rapid City, the people here really value freedom. So, I think that makes the connection for people even if they haven’t really heard of the holiday,” explained Rapid City community member Michelle Porter.

That educational aspect of the event is what some people hope will spark a curiosity to keep learning more about the holiday and the culture behind it.

“Learn something or understand something that they didn’t know before. I feel that when you have an opportunity to experience new people, new things, and new events, and you can take away something new from it, it is better for all of us,” said Rapid City community member John Smith.

The event will feature performances and presentations by:

  • The Dynamix Woman’s Chorale Group
  • Noteworthy Quartet
  • Dance numbers by Stepheon Stewart and the Golden Girls
  • Joyce Jefferson
  • Scholar Lindsey Clouse
