Hidden Treasures Heritage Festival highlights Lead’s historic Italian community

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Lead was once the second largest city in South Dakota and the largest west river. At the time, the mining hub brought people from all around the world. The city’s annual Hidden Treasures Heritage Festival focuses on one historic community each year - and in 2024, Italian culture will be at the forefront.

“We have so much history here, and it’s really important for that history to be shared,” Lead City Planner Robin Lucero said.

Leaders in Lead expressed excitement for the event and the possibility of economic development that may come with it.

“We know that across the state of South Dakota, arts and cultural events and historical events like we’re doing here in Lead have a ripple effect throughout the community,” Deadwood-Lead Economic Development Executive Director Emma Garvin said.

Garvin said her organization tracks money spent in the area during events like the Hidden Treasures Heritage Festival, and visitors are reportedly more likely to shop at multiple businesses when events like this are ongoing. Multiple restaurants in Lead will participate, crafting special Italian cuisine for those who stop by. Other attractions include tours of Lead’s historic Italian district and cooking classes.
