Mixology at Home - Jalapeno and Cucumber Cocktail
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - It is surprisingly easy to create this spicy-cool concoction. All it takes is a quick trip to your local grocery produce section for some cucumber and jalapeno. A little more heat? You can opt for a serrano pepper. Don’t forget to pick up some lime as well.
Whenever possible, use fresh ingredients in your drinks. You will taste the difference.
A little advice - don’t forget the lime. If you look at the video, I forgot to add the half ounce of lime; and that was a critical mistake.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ oz vodka
- ½ oz agave syrup or simple syrup
- ½ oz lime juice
- 3 slices of jalapeno pepper
- 4-6 slices of cucumber (one for garnish)
- 3 oz club soda
First, peel and slice a cucumber. You want four to six slices in the drink and an extra slice for garnish. Also cut two to three slices of your pepper ... depending on how much heat you want. I usually opt for three.
Muddle the cucumber (I use four slices) and pepper in a shaker or tin, add ice, one and a half ounces of vodka, a half ounce of agave syrup (or simple syrup, your call), and a half ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice.
Shake until the drink is chilled and mixed. A good way to know is if the tin is frosted. Then, using a strainer, pour into a rocks or Old Fashioned glass with a large ice cube. Add three ounces of club soda and gently stir to mix. Then garnish with the cucumber slice. Go ahead and add a slice of pepper if you want more garnish.
Syrups
You can make your own cucumber syrup. In a small saucepan, bring a cup of water to boil; add a cup of sugar and when dissolved, add a small to medium-sized cucumber, peeled and sliced. Turn down the heat to simmer for five minutes. Let the syrup cool before straining it into a bottle. The syrup should last two weeks in your refrigerator.
If you want jalapeno syrup, use the same water and sugar ratio and add two sliced jalapeno peppers. Just remember, the heat can vary and if you use a serrano instead of jalapeno, note that the serrano is probably going to be twice as hot.
You can also make a combined cucumber-jalapeno syrup.
