RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The Rapid City Police Department is once again offering a front-row seat to those interested in learning about law enforcement.

RCPD’s Applications for the Citizen’s Police Academy are now open to members of the community.

Whether you’re aiming to become an officer, or just interested in how law enforcement operates, participants in the 13-week program will learn what it takes to protect and serve the community.

Rapid City’s Public Information Officer Brendyn Medina says this opportunity is a great way to build trust between citizens and law enforcement.

“It’s all about building bridges with the community because in law enforcement, we can only do our job to the extent that the community trusts us to do our job and so this is one more way we work to build trust within the community, by just being transparent, being open and honest with our community,” Medina said.

Participants will get training and hands-on experience in a variety of areas like driving patrol cars, learning how to operate firearms, and even working through a mock crime scene.

Medina says this eye-opening experience will show you first-hand what police officers do, as well as why and how they do it. The free 13-week program begins in mid-August and ends in November. For more information or an application, you can click here.
