RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) -With the Fourth of July only days away, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind the public of firework restrictions in different areas of the Black Hills.

Discharging fireworks is illegal in the Black Hills Fire Protection District and isn’t allowed within Rapid City or a one-mile radius of city limits.

Other towns where fireworks discharge is prohibited are Keystone, Hill City, and Wall.

However, residents of those towns are allowed to use novelty fireworks including sparklers, snappers, poppers, and toy caps.

According to South Dakota state law, the discharge of fireworks is allowed in some areas between June 27 and July 8.

PCSO Patrol Lieutenant Casey Kenrick said the Sheriff’s Office sets an 11 p.m. limit in areas where fireworks are allowed.

“It definitely turns into a war zone because everybody that’s out there, all the smoke and the fireworks. And so we’re looking at trying to shut it down so people can sleep at around 11 O’clock. So, we’d really like some help with the community members of just complying with that,” Kenrick said.

Anyone caught discharging fireworks in prohibited areas could serve 30 days in jail and pay a fine of up to $500.

People wondering whether or not their address falls within the one-mile radius of Rapid City’s city limits can go to this link.

Or on the Pennington County website where it explains in detail where you cannot discharge fireworks.
