Red flags to look for during scam calls
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Recently, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office received calls from people complaining about scamming attempts.
A warrants division sergeant says scammers like to pretend to be cops over the phone, attempting to trick people into thinking they missed jury duty, have an outstanding warrant, or hand over their money.
Scammer calls can falsely appear to be coming from the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
At times, scammers will use the name of the sheriff, makeup supervisor names, or other people from the office.
It’s also important for people to be aware that typically scammers often request gift cards to pay any alleged judgments or fines.
“At the end of the day, you know, we have people who do call on warrants and who will call people to pick up subpoenas. However, we don’t, we don’t ever need them to provide us with gift cards,” Sergeant Jeromey Smith of the PCSO Warrants Division said.
People should always be skeptical whenever they receive a call from law enforcement requesting money.
