VIENNA, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) - Three people died when a plane attempting to make an emergency landing crashed near an airport in Northeast Ohio.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, troopers were called to a plane crash at about 7 p.m. at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station near the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport.

Troopers say they found a multi-engine aircraft crashed near a runway. According to an Associated Press report, the Federal Aviation Administration said it was a twin-engine Beechcraft 60.

The aircraft was occupied by a pilot and two passengers. All three occupants died in the crash. The families of the victims have been notified and officials will release their names later, according to the Associated Press.

Troopers suspect a mechanical failure was what forced the attempted emergency landing.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an independent investigation.
