Another home collapses into the Atlantic ocean
RODANTHE, N.C. (WITN/WBTV/Gray News) - Another house came crashing down in North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
The home was along G.A. Kohler Court in Rodanthe, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore said.
It is the third house collapse in just four days in the area.
The first one collapsed early Friday after high surf and king tides battered the beach. Nobody was inside, but a second home was damaged by the collapse. The second home ended up collapsing later that night.
The third and latest collapse happened shortly after 1:00 p.m., nearly taking out another house next door.
There are still two homes left on that stretch of beach that are in danger of collapsing.
The Cape Hatteras National Seashore says a debris cleanup contractor has already been hired for cleanup.
Because of the debris, officials are urging visitors and swimmers to avoid the beach near where the home came down.
“Dangerous debris may be present on the beach and in the water to the north and south of the collapse site, which will likely lead to temporary beach closures for public safety,” officials said in a news release.
Friday’s collapse was the tenth home on the beaches of Cape Hatteras National Seashore over the past four years.
Nobody was hurt in any of the collapses.
The park service said the daily effects of winds, waves and tides, along with rising seas and storms, have contributed to coastal erosion impacts. Because of that erosion, many homes and buildings on open beachfront or in intertidal areas have been left.
