TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray News) - A family said they were “scared for their lives” after a tree crashed through their home during Helene.

“It was no less than two feet away from my head, one of the branches that came in,” Jennifer Kruis said. “I did have that moment of ‘my life flashed before my eyes.’”

She said her family hid in the closet with their dogs, worried that more trees would fall.

“They must’ve been sharing the same root system because that one went down, this went down this way, and the other went this way,” Kruis explained.

Kruis and her husband said they are counting their blessings and thankful to be alive after the storm which is why they’re choosing to focus on the positive no matter how bad things may seem.

“You kind of wake up different the next day, just look at your life a little bit differently,” Kruis said. “Always be grateful. I can’t say it enough be grateful for what you have and realize what happened to you, somebody has it worse.”

Five trees in total came down in their yard during Helene.
