COWLITZ COUNTY Wash. (KPTV/Gray News) - A child climbed out of a crashed car and flagged down help after a fatal wreck.

Just before 11 a.m. Sunday, fire crews responded to a crash at the bottom of a 15-foot embankment at North Pacific Avenue and Ostrander Avenue in Washington.

Authorities said the car was about 50 feet from the road.

Firefighters said one of the children was able to get out of the car, climb up the embankment and flag down a passing driver who called 911.

Crews had to cut two people out of the car with hydraulic tools.

A man was declared dead at the scene and a 9-year-old was flown to a hospital in Portland, Oregon, for “multiple injuries.”

Two other children, ages 2 and 7, were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.
