1 person dead, 9 injured in shooting near Tennessee State University, police say
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV/Gray News) - One person is dead and nine others are injured after a shooting near Tennessee State University, according to authorities.
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, the shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. at Jefferson Street and 21st Avenue North.
Police said the shooting occurred after the crowd began to thin out following TSU homecoming festivities.
Authorities said the victim was identified as 24-year-old Vonquae Johnson.
Police confirmed that one 12-year-old girl and two 14-year-old girls were also injured in the shooting but are expected to survive.
Five other victims were taken to the hospitals. They are ages 30 to 50, police confirm.
Investigators said gunfire was exchanged between two groups on opposite sides of the street, with some bystanders being hit in the crossfire.
There is currently no confirmation on the number of shooters, but police said that at least one of them is being treated at a hospital.
Police recovered one handgun at the scene and say that they believe handguns were the weapons used in the shooting.
Surveillance cameras are being reviewed by police to identify suspects.
Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell called the shooting a “senseless act of violence” in a post on X.
