Lead community learns progress of Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility

Tuesday night the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory updated the community on the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility in Lead, a facility required for a high-intensity neutrino beam.

One project manager says the experiment collaboration has now exceeded 1,000 members over 100 institutions, they've hired a general contractor, and they received an $88 million donation from the United Kingdom.

Officials say this experiment will benefit not only the science community, but it will benefit South Dakota as a whole.

Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility Project Manager Joshua Willhite says, "So there's going to be a huge economic benefit to the entire state of South Dakota, but really specifically here. We're going to bring in a lot of workers to build the experiment, to build the facility first then to build the experiment. We're going to bring in workers to work on the experiment once it's in place and all of those workers are going to be contributing to the community while they're here."
